10 fun things to do with your spouse

1. Stuff a love note in their wallet or tuck it under a windshield wiper.

2. Change the desktop wallpaper to a cute photo of you two on your spouse’s home computer.

3. Burn a CD with tunes from your dating days and include your first dance or fave song.

4. Look up the date of the next full moon and celebrate with a champagne toast.

5. Hate basketball, but your main squeeze is addicted? Despise musicals, but your partner can’t get enough? Suck it up and get tickets — the reward will be worth it.

6. Forget breakfast in bed. Have dinner in bed (and don’t worry about the crumbs).

7. Go to bed early. No books, no BlackBerry, no remote. Note that we didn’t say sleep.

8. Create a cocktail together and name it after yourselves.

9. Go to a bookstore or music store together, then split up. Your mission: Buy something you know they’ll love. Then wrap and exchange.

10. Spend a weekend apart (substitute your best pal, sister, or old college roommate) and plan to meet back at your place after 48 hours. Absence is an aphrodisiac.

Sometimes people delay marriage because they are searching for the perfect soul mate. But that view has it backward. Your spouse becomes your soul mate after you’ve made those vows to each other in front of God and the people who matter to you. You don’t marry someone because he’s your soul mate; he becomes your soul mate because you married him.

A Big Mistake: Planning the ceremony last

Before you put down deposits and set a date, you want to make sure that all pieces of the wedding will work, including the most important part, the ceremony. Make sure that the officiate will be available for the date that you have in mind. There is no sense reserving a space if your officiate won’t be able to make it. Also, if you are planning to have the ceremony at a location different than the reception, make sure that both spaces are open for the date you are considering.

Not involving your future spouse

Times have changed and it is no longer the status quo for the bride to be the sole decision maker in the wedding planning process. After all, both you and your fiance will be attending the wedding and be embarking on a huge step together towards a lifetime of happiness. You want to make sure that their opinions are heard. Let them make decisions, choose some of the music, and be allowed equal input on the planning process. Maybe set aside time each week to talk about the wedding and what needs to be done.
